College Prep Theory Classes
St. Francis Music Center will offer college prep music theory classes on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. starting on January 25. The classes will be taught by Celo V'ec and are open to the public. The classes will be free although each student will be responsible for obtaining their own text book and work book. The classes are open to high school students and adults. College prep music theory prepares students for the Advanced Placement Exam and for music-theory placement exams given to music majors in many colleges and conservatories. Any high school student considering a music major or minor in college should consider taking this class. Music theory is also excellent for any musician to open your ears to deeper musical understanding and enhance your playing skills. To register for the class and for more information, call St. Francis Music Center at (320) 632-0637. Mila Performs for the Music Center!
St. Francis Music Center is proud to present a free concert by Mila. The concert will be on February 28 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. Mila is a professional women's vocal ensemble committed to the authentic reproduction of vocal traditions from over 30 countries in over a dozen distinct vocal styles. While grounded in the harmonic traditions of Eastern Europe, Mila's repertoire also includes music from Central and Western Europe, Asia and the Americas. Mila has performed to international acclaim, always pushing the boundaries of rhythm, harmony and styling. Mila's nine singers all hail from unique musical backgrounds and have studied with renowned vocalists from Bulgaria, France, Hungary, Macedonia, Serbia, Spain and Ukraine. Mila owes its accuracy and authenticity to passionate research and rigorous training with native speakers and performers-including two of its current members. Between them, the singers of Mila speak nearly a dozen languages. The name "Mila" has beautiful connotations-including "dear one," "love" and "celebration"-in many of the languages represented by its repertoire; it is also a common women's name in many Eastern European countries. Through the integrity of its music, Mila celebrates the beauty of the world's cultures. Celo V'ec, string instructor at the Music Center, is creating a Women's Slavic Choir, in the style of Mila so anyone interested in joining this choir should take this opportunity to hear this style of music. Mr. V'ec is the founder of the world famous Yale Women's Slavic Choir. Everyone is welcome to come and experience Mila in concert on Sunday, February 28. The concert is free and open to the public. There will be a free will offering. For more information on the concert or on joining the Women's Slavic Choir, please contact St. Francis Music Center at (320) 632-0637. |

Special Programs
Keyboard Festival Each Spring the Music Center hosts a Keyboard Festival for all central Minnesota piano students. Students have an opportunity to perform a memorized piece for a professional clinician who then gives them a short lesson and a written critique. The lesson also serves as a audition for the Honors Concert which is also part of the Festival. The 2010 Festival is April 16 and 17. Contact the Music Center for registration information. Recitals We schedule recitals four times a year: Halloween Recitals, Holiday Recitals, Winter Recitals and Spring Recitals. We encourage every student to participate in the recitals, performing is a part of learning to play an instrument. We offer several different times for the recitals, hoping to be able to fit into each families' schedule. If your child does not wish to participate, please bring them to one of the recitals so that they can see the process and see others perform. This may encourage them to perform at a later recital. Each recital is followed by a reception in honor of the performers. Spring Dance and Gymnastics Recitals Early each May we present all of our dancers and gymnasts in recitals at the Charles Martin Auditorium in the Little Falls Community High School. These recitals are fully costumed and are open to the public. Dancers will order costumes for the recital in late December. The gymnasts will order costumes in February. There will be an extra charge for the costumes, we do try to keep the prices as low as possible. Con Brio String Orchestra A string orchestra for beginning string students is held on Saturday mornings. Once again, this is for all string students in the area who are just beginning lessons and for more advanced students as well. This is a great opportunity to motivate young students to play and practice, the time spent playing together will be fun and relaxed. Led by Celo V'ec, the ensemble will meet every Saturday morning from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Sforzando String Orchestra All area bowed string students and artists are invited to become a part of The New String Ensemble. This group meets weekly to play music together and to enjoy the company of other string players. There is no age limit to the group, and you do not have to take private lessons at the Music Center to participate. Grants and donations allow us to offer this opportunity for free. Led by Celo V'ec, the ensemble meets every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. U ROCK Summer Camp This program is designed for everyone who has always wanted to be in a band! "U Rock" is for guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboards and vocalists. Other instruments such as violins are also welcome to apply. Students will learn the basics of being in a band; then everyone will be divided into their own bands. The conclusion of camp will be a great concert featuring all the students and the faculty! The types of bands formed will be based on the interest of each player - rock, pop, country, hip hop, anything is possible. Concert for Peace This non-political concert is a way of promoting peace in our homes, out chools, our communities and our world. Music is a universal language that brings us all together and helps form a base of common understanding. The Concert for Peace will celebrate music, peace, and community and will feature local musicians and choirs. People are invited to visit and sing along. |
